1997 e300 w210 radiator electric aux fan

Our '97 E300 has an electric auxiliary radiator fan, that will only turn on sometimes, in hot weather. It switches on and off as it should, but makes a loud clattery rattle when it's on, so I suspect the electric motor is bad.

Does anyone have a procedure for how to replace this motor? Is it difficult to get to or require any special tools?

I did a forum search, but most of the threads I found were for older models and not for W210's.

Thanks in advance.

I replaced the radiator on my '98 and as I remember, the fan assembly wasn't hard at all to remove.

I replaced it

I have a 96 E300 and with 220kmi. on it, it was shot. Probably due to a bad climate control head unit that was always telling the fans that the AC was on.
It's easier to just change the entire assembly. I do not remember off hand the seller's name, but I bought it on Ebay. It came with both fans on the framework with motor cheaper than anywhere online. Parts were a dead on match and work perfectly.

PS. If you have anywhere near 200kmi. I STRONGLY suggest changing the mechanical (water pump driven) fan clutch. I could not believe the difference that made.

So, changing the fan clutch made a difference in how well the AC cooled?

When you say the "difference that made", can you elaborate a bit? Lower engine coolant temperature? Colder A/C? Less fan noise? Or something else?

I'm at 175k miles.

Thanks

new fan clutch will certainly affect ac operation as well as coolant temps on grades, and highway/city driving. that fan is a HUGE air mover.

You need both fan systems to work properly.

The fan motor assembly takes about 20 minutes to R&R. Take it out and remove the belt. Then you can ensure that the problem really is the motor and not the idler.

You can buy just the motor. I got one from Phil (here). It's very easy to remove the old motor and bolt in the new one. I would recommend getting a new belt while you're at it.

I am not aware of a way to get parts for the fan but I have just received the whole assembly and have reattached it to the plastic shroud. I will install it when the weather warms. ************** The pully and fan are pressed on the motor shaft. I was not able to remove them. I had planned on replacing the ball bearing on the motor, but gave up and paid the $80 for the whole assembly. It looks just like the original. If you have any questions PM me.

It's not nice to advertise other parts sources here on this site.
our AWESOME site is free, and remains that way with parts sales from the BUY PARTS link at the top of the page.
pretty much anything MB related can be sourced with a phone call to roy or lee, give them a call!
