1999 E300TD Glow Plug Question??? Please Help!!!

Well after fighting with my glow plugs and breaking two off I got the one out without hurting anything. I need to know what is the thread pitch for the glow plugs. As I want to ream and re tap the glow plug holes... And if you know who has the tool that would be helpful and if I dont have a reamer what can I use instead of the $80 part.

Thanks in advance....

George

The Threads are 12x1.25
The Reamer part of the Factory Reamer is 7mm.

If you are interested in a homemade Glow Plug Reamer like the one below (that is a 6 Flute/Groove Reamer on the end not a Drill Bit) let me know.

Some members have used a Drill Bit twisted by hand.

Red face

How do you make the one that you have in the picture and how well did that work. If you could share how you made it that would be great. I see its a glow plug cut but where did you get the reamer and what specificly is it? Thanks so much I appreciate your help..

You need to get the proper reamer tool. Anything less and you will be right back were you are now in short order. I am speaking from experience.

You broke 2 off but got one out? If there is still one stuck in the head, I'd take it off and send it to Metric Motors to see if they can take it out

I believe I have the proper reaming tool so if you want to borrow it, I can lend it but if you have a stuck plug, don't try to force it out. It will wreck your head.

Some have said that you can crank the engine and the piece comes out, MAYBE. I think you may have FUBARed the head. I drilled the plug out but it went at the wrong angle and messed up the head. Managed to save the head but one plug screwed in too far.

FUBAR:= Fawked Up Beyond All Recognition

The tip might have swelled up. Supposedly the Bosch ones in the Powerstroke engines have that issue. The carbon could have formed around the GP tip. I have the reamer to clean that and I do that every year.

Your only option is to crank it and hope the pressure pushes it out. That or you can try soak it with Liquid Wrench of something like that and drill a hole in the GP, screw a long screw in and try to pull it out.

I am saying that my drill bit was off a few degrees and it gouged the metal head. Solution was to tap the threads further down and seal the GP to the head. As such, there wasn't as much sticking out of the head as with the others.

No guarantees express or implied. Do at your own risk.

Drill a smaller hole into the GP so that you can start a screw in it. When it has gone in deep enough, try to pull it out.

I really think that at this point, you would be better pulling the head.
