85 thermostat housing

So I pulled an 85SD's thermostat housing today at the pullapart to replace my 83's housing with the broken bolt (its not leaking bad, but I'm hanging around 70 degrees...I don't like that.)

So, there is an extra sensor on the 85's that my 83 doesn't have. Anybody know what that might be?

This is what my old one looks like

And here is one off of 85

the pics are reversed... you're showing the rear connection on the 85 part, and the front connection on the 83 part... the piece in your hand should be the same as the 85's... can you flip the 85 part over and take another pic?

it doesn't matter. i did an 85 engine swap into my 84 body (w123) and had the same issue as the 84 did not have that sensor. I decided to leave it alone and nothing has come of it, 2k miles later.

If you notice the little reverse nipple on the 83's, I bet that is the place for this other temp sensor. Maybe I could hook it up to my aux fan relay.

Yeah john, I actually just found these pics on the internet...I'll take a pic of both of my housings side by side.

That temperature sensor is for the 1985 only vacuum modulation system for the transmission. It's a 50º C sensor.

Looks like there are two sensors that my 83 didn't have. Shouldn't be a big deal. I'll probably just hang tiny german flags from their connectors.

you could paint them red, and when anybody looks at them, you can always say they are to tell you when the engine is done... (like the pop up turkey dohickies)

OK...I installed the new to me housing. Works great. Now instead of just below 80 I'm just above 80. That makes me happy...not big difference....but at least my housing bolts are all in tact.

NOW

I then went to fill up with fuel...3.22 yuck

So I filled it till I heard the click. Went inside to pay (we are in the boon docks) only to discover that after driving 415 miles...I put in 18.8 gallons.

Never, in the three years I've owned this...have more than 18 gallons ever gone in. Even when I ran out of gas and filled up. Does that mean their pump was off somehow?

it's possible. I once put 38gallons into a 27 gallon tank according to the fuel pump... I wrote nasty letters to the station owners, sent letters and voice mail to the agency on the certification stickers... no response. so if you got took at least it was for a small amount of fuel. I bet more and more of us are putting just a few bucks into the tank, and never really know what the pump is REALLY putting in.

I know here in calif, there is a agency (name?) that is weights and measures.they make sure the weight of something or the gallons a pump pumps is right on. there are stickers on the pumps stating when it was tested and calibrated. I would think you should contact your State agency in charge of it. this is a violation of State/County Law/Regs.

The red temp sensor on that thermostat is a 100C.

Pump Inspections
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) assists local, state and federal governments by setting forth uniform standards for measurements, laws and practices. The NIST shuts down any pumps that measure a difference greater than 3.3 ounces per every 5 gallons of gasoline. Contact the NIST relay office at (800) 877-8339.
