Rear main seal
Replacing the rear main seal on my 1984 190D, the motor is out of the car and completely torn apart sitting on my work bench in my garage. I got the new seal in the end cover, the question is can I use ultra blue RTV silicone gasket maker to seal the end cover to the block? The FSM says to use Loctite 573 or can I use something else?

No. it's an air tight space, and silicone will just blow out when oil pressure builds. you need to use the anaerobic loctite 573. it's really the best product for the job.

Ok. Where is a good place to get that? Would Autozone or Orylies have that? Also, can I use the loctite 573 when I put my timing cover on? Last edited by 04 Diesel; 12-30-2010 at 07:14 PM. |

I had to order my tube from the snapon truck. it's possible you can order it at advance or NAPA might have it... not sure.

Front Timing Cover
"Close Fitting" No RTV (It would never never cure)
Use Anerobic 574 loctite (Sets up and bonds in the absence of Oxygen.)

then no, I'd not use 573, I'd use the correct blue threadlocker. that IS available at any auto parts store.

Nobody has loctite around here, I went to Napa and they gave me Permatex Anaerobic gasket maker. He said that it is the same as the loctite. What do you think?

the P agm should be the same as 573, not the 241, 241 is going to be listed as permatex medium strength duty threadlocker.

So, what I have will work for the 573?

it should. the spec sheets for both products seem to indicate similar designs.

Loctite 574 is an anerobic flange sealant. I use it on all machined surfaces without a gasket. Any Porsche/Ferrari dealer will carry it and you can get it on E-Bay too. Wurth makes their own version of it too. I would wait and get the right sealant.
It will also stop the 'bleeding' from the fuel filter sealing washer on the 617....
