I was without ABS on my car for a while when I was tracking down my problem. Turned out to be a wheel speed sensor.

Anyways, when in Houston I had to slam on the brakes due to a car doing the same thing in front of me and the heavy car slid much farther than I thought it would narely missing a collision. That incident sped up my search to fix the ABS.

I guess it's one of those things where if you never had it you wouldn't miss it, but ABS seems to work well on mine and I enjoy having it's help in those moments.

When working correctly the Bosch ABS2E on the W126 is an excellent ABS system... there's a reason thousands if not millions of cars used it. If it is "unpredictable" then there is likely a bad wheel speed sensor, or a dirty tonewheel on one of the front wheels.

Is the wheel speed sensor located near the brakes? How can you tell if its bad?

It bolts into the back of the wheel. Very easy to remove and clean, as they are usually very dirty. I used brake cleaner. This didn't fix mine so I had to replace one. See this thread:

If you don't like the ABS you can always disable it....
