Valve adjustment dilemma

Hey guys.
This has probably been hashed out before, but using the search didn't come up with my exact symptoms. I'm probably not putting in the exact right words, but anyway.
Doing an adjustment on 1979 300SD. Going well on valves 1-5. On number 6, my helper and I ran into a little issue.
We broke loose the locking nut and tried to compress the spring. It seemed as if we were making progress, there was a decent sized gap between the lock nut and the adjusting nut. But when we went to turn the adjusting nut down to open the clearance, it just closed the gap between the two nuts without opening any clearance between the rocker pad and the cam lobe.
Any ideas? Are we just spinning the valve spring? If so, why would there end up being a gap between the two nuts ?
Does this question make sense or am I being clear as mud?

mud.
it sounds like you are turning the lower lock nut, while holding the upper adjustment nut, and the gap is not changing.
if the spring is turning, you will be tightening the adjuster nut, and not giving yourself any play. I jam a screwdriver into the spring area, to keep it from turning.
if the valves are really tight, you will need to drive a few hundred miles, and then re adjust after you get them correct. the valves need to seat themselves in once the clearance is set.

also, it's been found that severely worn valves will run out of threads for adjustment... so your lock nut may be at the bottom of it's adjustment travel...

A set of valve adjustment spanners consists of two 14mm spanners and a larger one for the cap that sits on top of the valve spring to stop it from spinning.

Take a look at the pictures in this thread:-
