Cleaning Where Upper Radiator Hose Attaches to Engine

I suspect a new upper radiator hose is in my near future. Discovered a leak, disonnected, and reattached....but we'll see. But it's been on there for a long time, so I'm due. It's a 1992 300D.

I'm sure crud has accumulated where the hose attaches. What do I need to do to clean it off so I'm sure to get a tight seal?

Thanks.

Wire brush to get rid of any crud on the fitting. If you are reusing the hose, scrape the inside to remove crud. Then a wipe of RTV on the surface the hose will be clamped on. Then place the hose on it & tighten it, some like to use 2 hose clamps.

I have never seen that before !! Very smart!!

In a word or 2 , RTV is just silicone. I use it as it fills any imperfections in the surfaces. When you are using an old hose it seals water tight always.

Haha...that's cute. I did do a google search, but only for the acronym "RTV" and it came up with a whole bunch of things.
