What does temp outside have to do wih idle
Greetings,
When it's above about 60 degrees I can keep my foot on the pedal until she warms up, and then she will idle o.k. When it's cold outside, about 30 degrees and colder, even after she warms up I still have to keep my foot on the pedal or she will die - she just struggles to idle. What could be causing this? Thanks for your help. Hugh Sr 1984 190d (W 201) 98,543 |

diesel engines run by heat in the motor combusting the fuel. if it's cold, it's MUCH harder to keep it running. less heat = less energy, and a more difficult time building combustion.
the most likely issue is glow plugs not working properly, although, fuel distribution/filtration is just as likely.

Do you have summer fuel? When it gets cold out summer diesel can get thick and plug up the fuel filter, which can cause trouble idling.

Rough idle at start up when cold is fairly normal. But at operating temp you shouldn't have to keep your foot on the pedal to make it idle smoothly. Rough idle is can be caused by many things. Fuel quality and type, fuel filters, air filter, idle speed set too low, uneven compression numbers, or poorly operating injectors.

Shouldn't the idle speed control take care of the temperature issue?
It sounds like it's not working. Is it called ELR or something like that on these engines?

EDS not working might be the case... does the EDS raise the idle speed when it's cold out on my early cars? It does on my 350, a friend didn't recall that feature on his 300SDL.

Where is the ELR or EDS located and what does it look like. Thanks.

The Electronic Diesel System computer controls the ELR idle speed actuator on the back of the injection pump. It's the round thing with a 2 wire plug on it.

Would my 1984 2.2 4 cylinder have these computer controls?
