Magnetic heater
4 years after installing a lower radiator hose heater 240d is getting picky about starting below 10 degrees.
315,000 miles. Installed a cheapie (200W) magnetic heater on the back of the block to help out the hose heater. First time I ever saw a little ice melt on the windshield, started great after 4 hours plugged in. |

No kidding, its probably long overdue for a valve adjustment. These are not "Set it and forget it" engines.

Placed on the back of the block, in front of the firewall.
Not sure if a 300 has as much room as a 240d. PS Valves are properly adjusted, glow plugs are new. Car is just getting tired. |

Condition/age of: battery? starter? Are you using a good synthetic 5w40 diesel oil? If not...then there's your problem. 240 engines are known to easily last well beyond 315k if properly maintained. Have you done a compression test to verify overall engine health?

My guess - it wasn't well maintained by the previous owner.
Good battery, I use a battery warmer. Synthetic blend, cranks easily. I've gotten 95,000 miles out of a $900 investment, no complaints. |
