Looking @ 99 E class Diesel w/ V6

I am not familiar with these at all ( okay you fill from the pump with the filthy greasey looking handle) it has a V6 Diesel w/186K miles on it. I am looking at it for my wife. She commutes 60 miles a day and has never forgiven me for letting a friend borrow her white,89 300E I bought her ( MB Starmark what a deal it was) Which he promptly wrecked by running head on into a tree ( I believe he thought the hood star was a gun sight) He totaled the car but walked away unhurt at all. The eng/tranny came up and split the dash in the center ever so slightly. All the doors and trunk etc opened and closed perfectly and were aligned ( Okay the "Bank Vault " analogy again)Any thoughts on the 1999. It looks contemporary enough style wise and it is a Diesel. Right now she is driving
our 03 Suburban and even being tuned up ( as much as these engines cane be)
and having the smaller V8 the mileage is embarassing. SO ??????

The engine is an I6, not a V6. The engine is quite reliable. The chassis can have issues with rust, and the engine can have fuel system leaks.....but otherwise they seem to be a great car from what people say.....and they will get 32+ mpg on the highway easily.

They do not get the mpg some claim they do. Don't be mislead.

Other than routine necessary maintenance any other car would need as well, they're a great car has been my 12 year experience with mine.

Skid Row Joe, I am a little suspicious though. It has new paint, wheels, tires and he says it is his personal car. I am not familiar with these so he says it is a V6, some else here says an
I6 ( like my old 124)
Whcih is it ( I am looking at the research page now)

If it is a diesel it isn't a V6 & visa versa

People are remarkably unfamiliar with what is under their hoods and also with automotive terminology. 99's did not come with V6 diesels no how. Maybe some of the later CDI engines were but not in 99. Cheers Dan

If it is a diesel, it is an I6 unless he had a V6 dropped in. I am with you, if there are too many things done to it, why? It sounds like a custom job. Is that what you are looking for, a modded out '99? Can you post a LINK to it here? Can you go look at it?

Personally, I would be looking for an example with 100K miles or less on it. The only problem then is that you may have to spend $3K to $5K to bring it current in maintenance, if the previous owner did zilch to it.

If the owner doesn't even know what kind of engine it has, he may not have done any maintenance either. Ask to see records. A Mercedes with no service records is an expensive roll of the dice.

He is going to email me the VIN #, As for looking for something custom, definitely not. I will try to place a link here ( have never done it before)
it is local so I can go see it. I founf it on Craigslist here in the Washington D.C.
Metro area. Again I am just begining my search and to be honest with those miles I believe he is priced kinda high, new paint and wheels or not.
The wheels on it look good but in the real world my wife will be driving this on the smooth highway from home to work but one of her 2 jobs is in the city where the roads are not as kind to expensive rims.
Thanks I will update this afternoon.
Alan
