The ideal sweet spot is a 1990, 1991, or 1992 car, as all the early bugs were long gone / remedied by then.
Thank you. I like my '90 w124. Though it seems like I have under-carriage rubber that I'm going to have to replace.

I do prefer the outward appearance, the body style of the the w126 and earlier cars. When I bought my w124 MK1 I would have preferred that it looked more like my old w123.

But the engineering on the w124 and the w140 certainly seems consistent with the past 100 years of MB technology.

It appears from the w210 forward that MB made a substantial change in their philosophy. One that many of the readers of this forum would prefer had not occurred.

But a properly cared-for, 15 year old w140 is an incredible car. I don't want one as I prefer E-Class cars and the w140 can be very expensive to maintain, but the design and engineering is remarkable.

And my '90 300D is (IMO) a fantastic car.

Of course these are just one guy's perspective.
