Some of the speedo shops that I have spoken too, even those that advertise MBZ speedo work, have told me it's 'no big deal' to calibrate the MBZ speedo; just change the gears in the transmission!!!!!!

On some of my old Porsche 911's, there was a tiny screw next to the needle that would allow you to adjust the speedo to correct small errors. I haven't looked at this MBZ unit to see if it has the screw....

Good report on the ratio code. I've often seen the numbers but had no idea what they meant.

I used to think it was crazy to have a different speedo for the different ratios, but given the choice of pulling the gauge pod or the trans tail shaft like some others I guess it is better, just a little annoying. now if we could find low cost gears to do a home brew change instead of the getting it done it would be great. Ive been debating taking apart one of my spares to look at the gears but I just am not ready to do it yet

I would think a ratio adapter, right at the gearbox, would be the easiest fix...

I have looked at ratio adapters, electric to mechanical converters, you name it. if you can get the original reaclibrated to the new gear for $165 thats a much better solution, cost wise it is better but functionally it doesnt add parts to break

I came across a 75 450SLC today at PNP. checked the Diff and spdo part #.
Spedo is, 107 542 18 01 and is a 160mph.

The Differential is a 3:08.

This should give you some more info on numbers.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! 240D w/auto

Anyone that thinks a 240D is slow drives too fast.

The number on the back should be W1330, which would be the cable count @60 for a 3.08:1 axle....

The answer is 1070 cable rpm, which means this '107' speedo would be off by 85 cable rpm.

In general, a 3.75% speedometer error is considered acceptable, which is about 50 cable rpm.

A 2.69:1 axle would yield 1165 cable rpm, so it is likely that this 107 speedo that I have, marked W1155, was originally destined to be used with an axle ratio very close to 2.69:1.

according to my illustrated buyers guide for mb the ratios are for us cars:
1. up thru 79= 307
2. 1980 = 265
3. 81 to 89 = 247.

My R107 speedo has an 1155 cable count on the back, which should be about correct for a 2.65 ratio. I need a 107 speedo with roughly a 1055 cable count that came with a 2.47:1 axle, so please keep this need in mind as you travel the scrap yards.

Finder's fee gladly paid.....
