300D 2.5L OM602 Belt Tensioner

CRUD!!! I've attempted to pull the belt tensioner with out pulling the radiator. It just won't work. It's a 92 single piece fan shroud and aluminum fan. Ahhhggg.

Thanks for letting me vent.

On the positive side. Now I've got even more reason to change out the coolant.

I'm a bit surprised, I changed the one in my '87 with the radiator in place. I believe that I pulled the fan off of the hub (10mm hex-bolts) and then pulled the fan and shroud out, worked great even with the extra cylinder up front. I'd expect there to be at least as much space in the 602 engine bay.

I have a 1992 300D and I just replaced the belt tensioner on my car without removing the radiator. I did have the fan and the shroud out.

OK guys. Help a brother out. The fan shroud is one piece. Two clips hold it on. Are you guys saying.
Remove belt, unclip fan shroud move towards engine, unscrew fan (10mm hex bolts). That will give you room to remove the tensioner?
Cause let me tell you. I was cussing up a storm.

No!

Keep belt on!

1st remove shroud, or better to say MOVE shroud forward so you can access the fan clutch.

insert 8mm hex into fan clutch, and remove.

if the whole assembly keeps turning, then you have to place a small allen wrench into a slot on the H20 pump. or you can grab the H20 pump pully with some vice-grips. but you might damage the pully.

Once the fan clutch bolt is removed, the fan and clutch come out together.

NOW take off the belt, them move on to the tensioner and pully, etc. . .

Brian

I removed the fan from the clutch simply because I couldn't get the clutch bolt free. Best is to remove together as Brian mentioned, if you can.

Yep, I had a hard time getting that bolt off too. If I remember right I had to take water pump out and drill the bolt out. I was going to replace the water pump anyway.
