E300D '99 Mileage: getting 22-23 MPG (?)

Just bought it about a week ago, filled it up. Got to 210 miles and put in 9.3 gallons of fuel to top her off again. Would winter fuel be a contributing factor for a low-20's MPG experience? Mostly highway driving, and modest habits, very little over 70 mph.

thanks!

Chuck

Best to recheck the fueling more times before jumping to any conclusions. I doubt it would fall off this bad from just winter fuel. Have a look for fuel leaks though.

Will do, Barry. Pretty sure zero leaks. Performance seems quite good. Taking it into inspection shortly. Probably I should consider the air filter and maybe MAF...

Remove the black plastic cover from the top of the engine and check to see if the diesel spill pipe is leaking. They often do. Very cheap repair job.

Also look for any wetness around the fuel pump. If it looks a bit damp, its leaking. Again, cheap easy repair job.

Draw no conclusions from one tank, especially a partial fill like you had - you could easily have inconsistency in the way you filled which would cause a 10% error or more in your estimate of MPGs - after a couple of tanks do an average and report back. If you do a lot of short hops where the engine doesn't get hot you could easily see mileage in the low 20's in the winter.

I would say under more normal driving conditions you should see mid to high 20's as a minimum in winter and if lower than that look for leaks and dragging brakes.
