no reverse after rebuild

im stumped. i just finished doing a full rebuild on my 722.418 transmission and replaced all the clutch plates and seals . and replaced the b1 band. upon testing going through all the gears to make sure engagement is good before i let the car down. all forward gears are good except no reverse, it bumps as if it is engaged but tires wont turn ? when i accelerate it sounds and feels like its being brake torqued? any suggestions ideas. i know im gonna have to take it back out, im just wondering if anyone may know where i screwed up. help!!b it came out of a 92 300d 2.5 turbo

There is some links to a Transmission Service Manual here:

I think you are one of maybe 3 other people in our whole Forum who have had experience rebuilding an Automatic Transmission.

Sorry, I'm only really, really good with 722.120's, but I have worked on some 722.418's over the years, but its been quite some time...

IIRC, on your 722.418, the K2 clutch is engaged in reverse along with the B3. I am recalling all of this from memory, so maybe someone else can chime in here too, perhaps even post an exploded view.

Best of luck....Robert

nevermind i got ahead of myself i had to be sure it would shift going forward first before i dropped the trans again, well after about 2 miles it would not shift out of first, so my first thought was oh **** i really screwed up now!!! but after a good blip of the throttle it shifted then shifted again . all was well after that. pulled in the drive and put her in reverse to see if it would engage and "viola" i had reverse!!!!!!!! german engineers have nothing on me. just kidding. so my consensus is that the vaseline that i was using to hold certain springs and ball bearings in the valve body and or grease to lube the b2 piston seal just needed to be worked through. but im gonna do a pressure reading test, just because... As far as fully rebuilding the trans, just take your time and pay attention to what you are doing and take lots of pictures before and after u pull something out like the valve body assembly and band guides , and of course pay special attention to which way springs and washers and shims came out so they go back in the same way. but i will be more than happy to help anyone through the process . just let me know!!!!!!

More than likely, you got some trash or other debris in a valve. Even the LINT from a shop rag will hang up a shuttle valve!!!!

Glad it works!!!!

Nice you took it for another spin before dropping the transmission again. I can almost imagine how you felt for a little while.

Hopefully the vasoline as you mentioned. Parts cost to do this transmission at home? As the other poster mentioned it is not everyday a member does one of these.

i really was confident i could do a trans rebuild since i am laid off for a couple of weeks .. the past couple of years diesels have been my thing especially MB. dont know why? there isnt any project that i wont tackle... but with my 140 mile commute to work everyday i guess i need the fuel mileage of a diesel and the comfort of a MB.. WRENCH ON EVERYONE WRENCH ON!
