Intermittent air leak on the suction side of the fuel system can cause this - somewhere before the fuel pump.

The primer pump is common spot for this to occur on the 616/617. I dont know your engine specifically.

I would say change filters first, then look for an air leak.

Mine is doing this right now. I take a hwy to work that is 65mph with stop lights interspersed on it. After getting up to 65 (or more) and then needing to stop suddenly for a light, I'll start rocking for a bit, then it will calm down. inline filter has a few pieces of junk in it and I'm assuming the spin-on has even more fine stuff in it.

It's on my list of things to do when I take a week off at the end of the month.

Betty needs to be sent to the scrap yard and Puff needs some maintenance items done.

Interesting that no one has mentioned engine mounts! My 87 Wagon shook at idle but once rpms were up a bit, it was fine. Installed new motor mounts and viola!

Bad motor mounts just make the fuel problem more obvious.

New motor mounts will hold a rocking engine fairly well, for a time.

The goal is to resolve what is causing the engine to become unbalanced, in this case appears to be a fueling issue.
