Cruise control compatibility

Hello all, new to the forum and new to MB. I have a 1995 E300D purchased without working cruise (I think W124 model). Worked intermittently for a couple of months, now dead. I took out the cruise control box and re-soldered all joints and cleaned contacts resulting with only temporary fix. Ebay has many cruise control boxes from other models and years that look similar to mine, without matching serial numbers though (usually for a C220). Will these other boxes that will fit actually work in my car or do I have to find an exact match?

There are about 15 different amplifier part numbers for the 11, and 14 pin units. Certain amps were used in many models. Yes, you need to have your part number match the suppliers.
For my car, there are two different part numbers that are both correct.

And you need to have the correct coding plug. The amps are somewhat generic and then get a particular coding plug for a particular vehicle.

I cannot recommend highly enough Peter at GDL. A wealth of information re Mercedes cruise systems.

Agreed, after waisting lots of time messing around I bought a rebuilt amp and a new actuator from him.

Is the E300D the small drawn-aluminum case Cruise amp below the gauge cluster like the '93 and older gassers & diesels, or is it the cast-aluminum box under the passenger floor like the '94-up gassers?
