You probably need to change the rest of your glowplugs. I think an appropriate sized swivel socket (where the socket is part of the swivel, not the separate swivel) will help. I've not done mine, but that is what my mechanic recommends.

Change the fuel filter with the engine hot -- takes a whole lot less battery power to crank it until it starts! Definitely fill the filter with diesel fuel or diesel purge, or RedLine, etc. -- takes forever to pump that filter full, and the 87 doesn't have a hand pump.

PE:

Lovely thought, but the drain plug on my 220D is well and truely seized in the aluminum housing! I've never seen any water in there anyway, nor in the Volvo which has a drain on the fuel filter.
