Don't Use Ether

Photos of 2 pre-chambers from a 603.

Don't use ether on diesel engine with glow plugs.

After it blows the end off the pre-chamber, it will start...... with the tip of the pre-chamber in the cylinder.

Game over.

This has been discussed very thoroughly .... and you have not proved that that is the cause of the injury.
Check the archive posts by people like moderator JimSmith ...

weather or not this is what caused the prechamber to fail, ether is a very explosive fuel, and when introduced to a hot glow plug the ether will fire while the piston is rising into the compression stroke. the pressure from this explosion is sufficient to bend rods.

The amount of ether if introduced like is suggested by all sane people... and JimSmith...
is not enough with regards to the BTU's involved to bend anything...
Remember, now that you are a moderator... you have to read the whole posts referred to...LOL

no question.

sane knowledgeable drivers introducing ether as a light fog WHILE cranking with the glow plugs disconnected should be safe to try... when all else has failed. but this thread starts out saying it's bad, and I agree.

working glow plugs getting a large dose of ether introduced to them can seriously damage a IDI motor.

if drivers would heed the warning NOT to use ether, or to use it PROPERLY and with extreme caution, many IDI diesels would live much longer lives.

I did read this thread entirely.

Probably plenty better things to sniff than ether, been told it gives a wicked hangover. The local kids used to get the nitrous oxide bombs (laughing gas) from the cake decorator shop & fill a soda siphon (no water) and suck on it.

Oh No! Not more ether Paranoia!

Ether sprays are perfectly safe to use in Diesel engines provided glow plugs have been disabled and would certainly not crack or "blow the end off the pre-chamber" under any circumstances nor can it damage an engine in any way whatsoever. Ether only assists ignition of the diesel fuel injected by way of its lower auto ignition temp. Model Diesel engines run on a mixture of 40% ether,30% diesel and 30% caster oil and I can confirm that I have never had one "blow Up".They will also run perfectly well on 100% Ether though underpowered..........for about 5mins until they seize due to lack of lube - ask my grandson!

Ether (auto-ignition temp. 160°C) is NOT an explosive substance and is in fact very far from it. To convince yourself pour some into a saucer and light it. It burns slowly with a soft cool yellow flame.

The very necessary warnings of "Explosions" on the bottle refer to its storage and handling. Ether has a heavy vapor and if you leave a bottle uncapped overnight in a basement it will be empty in the morning and you will be standing up to your waist in an explosive mixture of ether vapor and air - drop a match and........................
