Alternater belt is rubbing on bracket.

First let me say that changing an alternater belt shouldn't be this damned difficult. I got the new belt on but the belt is rubbing on part of the bracket that holds the tensioner screw. Since the belt broke while on the road I didn't get to see what this looked like before. SOOOOO I'll be driving the wifes van to work again tommorrow. Any help on how to correct the problem would be much appreciated and pics would be helpful. It's a 1981 240D. Thanks, JEFF

yes, that flange is where the SLS pump would go on a 123 Wagon... and I'd guess it's from a california model 85... but the opposite side of the pic shows a pretty good look of the alternator bracket.

If the belt is rubbing the bracket, the bracket may be bent. It is easy to bend the bracket by trying to adjust it without the alternator being loosened.

I had issues with belts rubbing on this area. I cured it by using a smaller belt.

That's an 85 Kali motor with the dreaded trap.

To change alternator belts or to adjust tension, only the bottom alternator bolt and the bracket lock down bolts (both 17 mm accessed on the regulator side) need to be loosened.

I don't really think so. The pulleys are all on the engine and not seperate from the mounts.

So wouldn't a bad engine mount just cause the entire thing to tilt to one side?

To the OP: If the bracket is too rusty to deal with you can take an eye bolt, some washers, and bolts to fashion a new tensioner out of it for $4. Here's the thread where I made mine and took a picture for reference. Stuck on V-Belts: ALternator bolts frozen and tension bolt broken

Good luck!

Thanks All, The bracket doesn't appear to be bent or broken so I'm not quite sure what the problem is. I'm headed back out to the garage now to try to figure it out.

OK problem solved. Turns out I didn't have the bottom pivot bolt loose enough and it wasn't allowing the alternator/bracket to move in it's full range of motion. As a result the bracket was stuck in an odd position close to the belt and rubbing. I have another problem now but I'll put that in a different post. Thanks everyone for the help. Jeff
