Picked up the Bluetec this morning and it is a phenomenal car. By far the best I have ever owned, hands down. I have no complaints, everything it does it does well and the dealer made the trade process very easy too - they looked over my C300 and determined there was nothing of concern in terms of excess wear and tear (I have had nothing but good experiences with M-B in this regard in the past).

The diesel is a little noisier than the petrol version at slow speeds but once on the highway you can't tell it is a diesel. I've only driven it about 30 miles so far but been averaging 32 MPG on the internal computer so can't complain about that either.

If it is as trouble free as the past few new ones we've had I will be very happy with the upgrade. I'll report back in a couple of weeks with an update, but so far it has lived up to my expectations, and then some

I told my wife if she doesn't like it I will gladly take it and trade my Jetta for something for her in the Spring...but I suspect I won't have to resort to that.

You ought to be able to get all of that work done for less than half what the dealer quoted at any good indy shop which specializes on M-B. If the car is really "like new" otherwise it is probably still worth it to have it fixed, and get a few more years out of it. Even if you spent $5K getting it back on the road...what can you buy for $5K that's equal in ride?

There are also tons of "flippers" looking for nice cars that need mechanical work. A flipper will put a salvage tranny in and do the work needed for around $500-$1000 in parts and resell it for $7500.
Yep, plus a lot of the stuff the dealers make a big deal about isn't. They call a joint that's slightly wet a leak.

The residual value is what MB can unload the car for, and believe me there are many folks who are willing to buy these low mileage “certified” used cars at such high prices, they just do not realize what they are getting into.

My E320 is a good example of the larger problem, its parked in my driveway, cosmetically it looks like a new car, but in addition to dead transmission it needs $7K worth of engine work. Mercedes cars do not age and do not show their age like other cars, this becomes a trap for many who buy these cars because they look like “showroom condition” soon to wake up and discover the disaster they walked into.

I've never experienced problems with either of the (2) MB diesels I've owned to the degree or mileage you have, covering 21 years and 428K miles.

Your guess of a "50K miles/5 year lifespan," to me is an odd opinion to have considering my MB diesel experience.

The prices you are quoting seem unreasonably high, as well. I noticed your's is a gasser MB, not a diesel. This is a thread located in the "Diesel Discussion" forum of Peach Parts. I would likely not be a gas MB buyer anyway, but my diesels haven't been that problematic.
