Alternator not turning
Hello all, I just changed my alternator belt and now the alternator is not turning. The belt is turning but the "fins" (not correct term I know) on the front of the alternator isn't turning along with belt squealing and smoke from the alternator. The belt doesn't appear too tight. I had sprayed PB blaster on the bolts earlier. Possible this leaked into the unit causing problems? I had also been tapping on the alternator earlier to move it, Possible I damaged something inside keeping it from turning freely? Thanks,JEFF

Looks like too much TLC. Can U remove belts and try by hand back and forth to break lose?

If you bent one of the fins on the front it could be hitting the housing. Otherwise nothing you describe suggests a bearing should be frozen. Look it over carefully for the culprit and in the future avoid using a hammer on your alternator!;)

To begin with were you changing the Belts to solve a specific problem?
People do not often think of it this way but a Hammer is actually a special tool. |
My vote is deffinitly on hammer/fin contact. take the belt off and straighten fins until it turns.

I had this issue once on a alternator change... I swapped in an unknown adjustment bracket, and it looked odd to me... the support for the adjustment bolt was bent out and it made contact with the fins of the alt. look at the adjustment bracket and verify nothing is contacting the cooling fins!
and yeah, if you hit the fins with a hammer, you could have easily bent one to where it hit the housing of the alt... flashlight time! |
