W123 Brake Pad Rattle Clip Position?

I'm working on replacing the front calipers at the moment but the new calipers came with a different style anti rattle clip. I can't decide which way the clip is supposed to sit. Here are some pics so someone please tell me which way it should face:
The first two pics are with the clip poking up(away from rotor)
The last two are with the clip poking down in between the brake pads towards the rotor.
My concern is that the "down" facing clip might prevent the pads from squeezing together against the rotor or the clip may rub along the outside edge of the rotor...which I'm not sure if it's supposed to do.
