I had to revive this thread with a photo of what I came home to tonight. 300 pounds of garlic harvested and when the back of the TD got full someone decided to fill the other seats. Pic sucks cause it was taken with my phone, but notice the dirt that has dropped in the shifter and they piled it high enough to get in the ac vents.
The wife and children have both been cleaning since they came up with the idea together.

Did that mask the billy juice sheen?

They were harvesting and just packed it in, and I guess really its her car, I just paid for it and work on it, don't really get to drive it much.
During the cleanup I negotiated the option to cuss her blue six months from now when all the window switches quit working because of the dirt in them.
It does look much better now that its vacuumed and wiped down.
She does this to the car all the time, billy juice sheen is quite dull now.

It's amazing how having kids changes your perspective on this issue. I would freak out 3 years ago about my cars being dirty but now I seem to care less. My cars are still clean and we don't ever let the kids eat in them but dirt doesn't seem to matter anymore.

It's a battle that you just can not win. Wife has been driving the kids in my 82TD until I get her e320 wagon finally fixed... seems like every other day I remove at least a bag of kid trash from the car. I've basically given up on the carpets at this point since I plan on completely replacing them once I start using the car for myself. It's a real PITA actually. I spend hours/days rebuilding the car, get it so clean it looks like it just came of the showroom, and it's trashed in a matter of days.

sigh

My kids know that there is no eating in Daddy's car.
Mom's car can get like a rolling compost heap....

It got much better for awhile when I relayed the story of "The Roach Car" that came into my brothers shop when I worked there.
Had to explain to the owner that not only were we not going to fix her car, but we did not want it parked next to the building.
Came in for a heater core.... mechanic crawled in and started under the dash... came out screaming like a little girl after about 30 seconds.... guess the roaches were crawling on his head....

Now if the wife's car starts getting bad, I start 'seeing' bugs... that is typically enough to keep the car spotless for a couple weeks.

There is no eating in my car. Nor is there smoking or drinking of anything other than water. I had a passenger get in my car with cup of coffee. ONCE.
