Unhappy Delivery Valve Leaking Again

I did all the fuel ine work on my 98 E300 Diesel Before Christmas. Everything was good until yesterday and I smelled diesel. Upon inspection I have weepage at the base of the 3rd delivery valve back. The prior leak was somewhere in this same area (2nd or 3rd delivery valve). I confirmed the leak by cleaning the area with brake cleaner again. It was dry last week when I put the plastic cover back on top of the engine.

What did I do wrong?
  • New crush washers
  • New OEM O-rings (Probably not Viton but I run standard diesel)
  • 3 step torque procedure
  • Is it simply that I didn't clean the O-ring sealing surfaces good?
  • The star retainer for number 3 does not seem to have the inerference that the other ones have. Maybe the points are knocked off some but I can't imaging it backed off any.
Anything to pay attention to on my 'Do-Over'?

Even the USLD is causeing rubber issues. Biodiesel causes rubber to swell, and ULSD causes it to shrink. Damned if you do damned if you don't.

You could have possibly damaged the o-ring, crush washer, or delivery valve on installation.

So do you think Viton would be a good choice, does it help prevent the shrinking of O rings from ULSD?

You know I'm not really sure.
