OM617 timing device - pictures of it in bits (there was no problem after all)

G'day All,

I'm in the middle of an engine rebuild and I was just about to fit the timing device when I gave it a wipe and I heard it rattle.

It was a really lightweight - like a ball bearing loose inside it kind of rattle. So I did what any other automotive-suicidal-like DIY mechanic would do and I started to take it apart!

This is all very well - but after a wipe I noticed some bluing:-

So my questions are:-

Is bluing "normal" or common?

Do these timing devices rattle?

Should I really take it to bits to find the rattle? (I'm inclined to do so but I'm not too confident I can get it back together again - these parts aren't cheap!)

What do you think?

{Couldn't find a thread of this in bits... despite google => timing device site:peachparts.com}

...that apparently I don't have!

I took it to bits - it is easy to get it back together again.

I kept track of the way round everything came apart - I made sure that everything went back in the same place. I guess this is a good thing for rotating parts.

I've found out about the rattle:-

There are two pins that sit inside the springs - these are the bits that rattle. So rattle is good (in this case).

I'm a bit unsure about the bluing though... what do you think could have caused it? (I know a lot of heat but - when / why etc etc - It isn't evidence of heat treatment is it?)

Forget about it - I've talked myself out of it - I'm being too critical - it is probably heat treatment bluing...

Leave me to it for long enough and I'll answer my own questions - I've changed the thread title so now at least you've all got some picture to look at!

Do you have a build thread on the engine?

Hi Jeff,

I'm working on it - I promised one in December (http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/289490-would-om617-non-turbo-rebuild-thread-worthwhile.html) but the engine still isn't complete yet. I'm a fair weather mechanic and it has been bitterly cold this winter. That's my piss poor excuse - and I'm sticking to it!

The discoloration is from the heat treatment hardening.

Thanks I realise that now - I put myself into a flat spin back there...

Jeff B 01-22-2011 10:23 AM

Cool, I'll be looking for it. Thanks

X2 correct !!

Army,
Konstan went through the timing device some time ago at the start of his rebuild. The most important thing is to make sure the end float is in spec. Have a look at some of his threads from 6 months ago.

I just remembered that other thing for you, will get onto it for Mondays post !! :o

Thank you very much kind Sir.

For those of you who have found this thread but not Konstan's here's a link to the page:-

(It is a monster thread)

I always wondered what one of those things looked like on the inside.
