Hard to beat a Lister. I have a 4HP, 1800 RPM Lister running a 2KW double V belt generator we use when the grid is down. It'll run 5 or 6 hours on a gallon of fuel and never miss a beat. Truly an engine built to run 24/7. I've heard mixed reviews on the Listeroids from India.

Back in the 50's Yanmar in Japan made some really good Lister knock offs,
much better than the Indian Literoids. I have a 1950's Yanmar SKE, which is a big one lung diesel marine engine, that looks just like a Lister marine engine (13hp at 1200rpm with a 24" 200lb flywheel). I keep it around the shop, just to listen to it tick over at idle (150 rpm)....pure music!

I also have a smaller Yanmar from the early 60's which is a knock-off of a Petter AV1, 7hp at 1200rpm. This little engine has about 20,000 hours on it, and still starts first crank. It runs a small generator via belt drive on my old trawler. It usually runs for 3 months straight every summer, keeping the air conditioner and freezer going, and wont burn 2 gallons in 24hrs no matter the load!

The key to long lived diesels is slow speed, big bearings, and excellent cooling. The reason we have gotten 15,000 hours out of the 12-71's on the boat I captain, is that we have the smallest injectors possible for the setup, and we never run on the turbos for any lenth of time, unless its an emergency. They run easy and cool, just ticking along at 1500 rpms. Oh, the extra large oil pans also help, with a several more gallons of oil to keep things cool.
