'90 300D t-stat replacement

In the process of removing t-stat housing. Do I have to remove any fuel hardlines to get the housing out? Looks pretty tight. I'm in the middle of it, but don't want to pull the 2 bolts yet if I have to take out fuel lines. thanks

Careful. I don't think thats your t-stat house you are looking at.

The t-stat is down on the passenger side of the block. There are no fuel lines there.

See pic... under the exhaust manifold.

I've never worked on a car that has it's t-stat on the side of the motor. Always on the front of the block. The third pic is the side of the motor. Wouldn't you lose most of your coolant if it's down there? That is, when you have to do a replacement.

Third pic shows the t-stat house. I promise. And, yes... you will lose most of your coolant if you do not drain it first.

That house on top of the head is empty. It's just a dummy to capture air / create a high point on the engine and mate the head design with the radiator.

All done, have heat now. The thermostat was stuck open. Thanks everyone. While I was underneath, found another problem- the IP is leaking from the bottom plate, or the side plate on the engine side. Either way, oil drip. Never ending fun.

You might be able to tighten up the screws without replacing the seal on the IP.

Its worth a shot before a very messy / involved task.

Get a 90* bent flathead or use a flathead drill bit in a small wrench to reach them.
