Over there you have road crews like here. It doesnt take a Phd to hold a stop sign on the side of the road. You would think the soft ware in the sign would have spell check!!

I guess they invented that signage to remove 2 idiots from the road crew. They must have promoted one of them!

You know, as a retired union Ironworker, (we build bridges, not roads, BTW), this is one of those things that really irks me. Why is it that the construction workers get stuck with all the blame for any problem on a job, anyway? Who says somebody in upper management didn't load this sign? Or the manufacturers of the equipment? Or a glitch in the software? I don't mean to rant, but in the 25+ years I was in construction, whether it was in the news reports or just regular (but ignorant) people discussing overages in either cost or time on particular jobs, the blame was always laid on the guys at the end of the line, (i.e., labor).
I've seen many (MANY) times that the architect, draftsmen, engineer, office girls, material suppliers (messed up fabrication, mislabeled parts or whole floors of steel sent out in the wrong sequence), were at fault to the point that jobs had to be shut down or delayed, meaning the men who built those things lost pay till it was straightened out. But the blame always goes to the guys who are out busting their butts in the cold, heat, rain and snow. They're an easy target, but most of the time, the screw up is from above. How many of you think the guys working on this job would allow themselves to look like idiots for an hour, much less a day, if they were able to reset that machine? Really, folks- maybe it's an office worker that's the idiot. Or the guy who rides around in the truck eating donuts all day, bird dogging the real work crew. The guys in view aren't always the guys in question. Just a thought.

I have been involved in earth moving including road work for some time. Those signs have a key board & you type your message in on site. Who ever typed the message is the person I refer to. Normally its one of the supervisors, hence my comment about the promotion. Generally its not the construction guys that are responsible for the signage. In my experience in the past, the guy who gets the job holding the slow down or stop sign is the guy that you dont want involved in the actual job.

Sorry about the soapbox speech, folks. Don't even get me started on the guy (now usually a pampered girl doing it while some old broken down geezer is out breaking his back) holding the warning sign. Oops!

Maybe that type of sign is limited to only displaying 3 Ps so they had to improvise after the initial mistake.

Like hearding Sheep

Well, while you all are pointing fingers, remember, three are pointing back at you. every one is alway critical of the Highway workers. you want the roads fixed, buy you don`t want to be inconvienced .

You drive by a crew parked along side the Highway, roadgrader, paver, roller, grinder several dump trucks, guys standing around. your tax dollars at work. wtf!!!! well for one thing, a lane closure on the Freeway can`t be put in before 9am, and has to be picked up by 3pm, because of the commute traffic.
we get delays some times, equipment breaks down, asphalt trucks held up in traffic, or the plant has a malfunction that holds us up. they drive by, flip us off. just considered the source.

the yard I worked out of 29yrs of my 37, was 2 lane mountain roads. 6 -7 man crew that took care of 60 + miles of road. 2 had to flag traffic, while the other 3 - 4 did the job. I was an equipment operator, grader. loader. back hoe, pavers, grinders, brush mowers, chippers, plow truck, guard rail repair (from stupid drivers) etc... yeah, even flagged traffic now and then, and that is like hearding sheep. baaa, baaaa. you want to see how stupid people are, flag traffic for a while.

I would be flagging the lane the crew was working in. I have traffic stopped. I walk up to the first car in line, tell the first person, as soon as the other flagman gives me the clear, and I see his last car come by. I want you to stay in the other lane, because we have guys and equip in this lane. "OH, OK". I get them going, and physically motion each car into the other lane. I turn around, and the idiots go back into the lane the crew is working in . then I have seen the first car stop behind the loader or grader and just sit there. Baaa, Baaaaa. what ever the first one does, the rest follow.

Some winter we would get some good snow up on top the hill. get it plowed, sanded, and you would think it was a hot sunny day the way they drive. and some would crash in the bank, go over the side, hit the guard rails.. I would be out on early morning sanding around 4:30am, lot of times we would get frost on the road. And I mean it would get slick. Iam sanding, flashing lights on, and some idiot comes up behind me, and passes over the double yellow. well, he just got sanded. now if a car was coming toward me, I cut the sander so I didn`t hit them.

Yeah I have stories too.

It`s not a big deal to drive by a Highway worker at 70mph 2 - 3 ft away, and think nothing of it. lets say we put your desk out there, and I drive by you at 70mph .

Yeah, I agree, there are idiot workers that the Govt hires. and a lot of them have the attitude they don`t have to do much. especially after the 6mo probation is over. there are also incompetant people in management. some of them are even college educated too.

So I guess I was one of those idiots too you are critizing. It never ends.

Charlie
