Alternator pulley size. W123 1984 300TD
I have a used alternator that I am going to put in my 300TD(1984). The pulley is smaller than the one I pulled off. How difficult is it going to be to get it tight? I don't have an impact wrench to swap it out or a socket that fits. I'm trying to decide if I should wait and fix it or go ahead and put it in. This is my first Alt swap so I don't want to go to all the trouble of putting it back in tonight if I end up having to take it back off. I will be getting a new regulator for it this week anyway, but I think I can change that out without taking the alternator off the car.
Any advice? Thanks.

I do not think anyone will be able to guess if you would not be able to tighten up the Belts with the smaller Pulley.
The reason I say that is because more than a few Members have had trouble when they order Alternator Belts. Evidently there is more than one length/size of Belts used and one size of Belts may not work on all models and years of 123s. So you are actually the best one to know. If you need an excuse to buy a new Tool I can recommend the Harbor Freight 12 volt Impact Wrenches (1/2" drive). I have one for each vehicle and an extra. I works almost as well as a Pneumatic Impact Wrench. It while it is made mainly for removing Wheel Lug Nuts/Bolts I have used it for all kinds of things to include removing a Crank Shaft Bolt torqed to 250 foot pounds and also Alternator Shaft Nuts. It also makes Tire Rotation or changing a Flat Faster and Easier; but, then that is what it was made to do.

Thanks for the advice Diesel911, I think I am going to swap the pulley to avoid further complications.
I would love to have some air tools at some point, but I need to first get a compressor. I can't afford any more tools at the moment.

so the small pulley I gave you is not going to work on your car? odd. I think it's designed smaller to get the alternator spinning faster at idle. it's off an 83 SD. you should have no issues with it.
I have the other one, and of course you have yours. it's simple to swap, and we live maybe 10 minutes from each other... AND I drove to rock hill tonight, and could have swapped it for ya! you've got my phone#, fee free to call ANY time!

I've found out that the water pump pulley on the SD is larger than on the 300D's so it figures the alt pulley would be smaller.

You could always calculate an approximate difference in length (figure roughly half of the circumference of each pulley and compare them). If it is less than the typical difference in belt lengths between the one you have and the next smaller belt (which is usually about 1/2") then you will be OK but if not you could just get a belt which is shorter than the factory belt and it would be easier than replacing the pulley, plus you will get more juice at idle because the alternator will be turning faster.
