Bad IP? engine swap smokes/shakes 1985 300td

I just installed a 617 into an 85 300td. The doner engine came out of a wrecked 1981 300td. I swapped over the oil pan, turbo manifold etc. The only non "85" thing about it was the IP that I left alone. When I started the engine I found a series of problems, which I am hoping are being caused by a bad IP. First of, it starts great, compression seems even, at least from a simple balance test. Secondly, there is a subtle knock above 2300 rpm, engine shakes a lot after it gets warm and it smokes like crazy. Where should I start?

I'm guessing you never heard the motor run before the purchase? no telling what's wrong. I'd do normal things, have the injectors popped and balanced, do a compression test. leak down, oil changed, known fuel/filters.
is this a wagon?

Sure would not hurt to check your valves too. Always good to have 'knowns' to help troubleshooting.
