Where to put anti-squeal paste with shims.
I am getting ready to do a front brake job.
I got the anti-squeal shims for the pads. Do I put the anti-squeal past on both sides of the shims? Just one side? Which side? What is the best brake job thread for my 126? |
I usually use the blue spray. However you put the stuff directly on the back of the brake pad, then put the shim on top of it. Do NOT use the spray or the grease on the face of the brake pad, of course.

Do I put it on the other side of the shim?

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diy-links-parts-category/142411-brake.html the 123 and 126 brakes are cousins to each other, here is a good pictorial. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/236897-how-guide-replace-front-brake-pads-rotors-w123.html Charlie |

I am asking about the anti-squeal shims that go between the pad and the caliper. The paste goes between the pad and the shim, but do you put grease between the shim and the caliper. |
It's probably not necessary to apply it to both sides of the shim. The anti-squeal paste is meant to be a sound/vibration dampner between the caliper and the metal portion of the pad. I've never tried it, but the shim may be enough to where the paste is not needed. However, rather than take it apart again it is easier to go ahead and use the paste.
If you have plenty, applying it both sides of the shim certainly will not hurt anything. |
I've always just put it on the back of the pad, and nothing on the shim.
Also once you've gotten it all back together, it's best to "settle the pads". This will also keep th breaks form making noise. To do this, you drive the car at about 30mph and lightly keep you right foot on the brake petal. Do this for a mile or so. DO NOT use a heavy foot you'll just cook everything. Just a light foot so you can just feel the pad grabbing. This will form the pad to the rotor, and keep them from making noises. I've use this procedure many times over the years and never had issues with squealing brakes. |
No, do not put the paste on both sides of the shim.

This is allot of discussion for something that.. in my own experience does nothing either way. I never put it on my stuff and it makes no change but i always put it on my customers rigs because.. its policy
