1979 300 sd clogged Injection Pump?
Thought it might be a good idea to throw in some of the BG diesel cleaner, guess that wasn't my best move.
Car had low power even with petal to the floor, so I changed both the fuel filters. Ran better for a while, but now it starts, dies. Starts, runs, but when you try to drive it you can only get a couple of blocks before it looses power and dies out again. Should I be looking at a clogged Injection Pump? Do I need to drop the tank and dump the diesel? Not sure what direction I should be headed with this problem. Any advice is appreciated! Last edited by whunter; 01-27-2011 at 02:52 AM. Check tank screen, and all filters first.

If you have a clear plastic Primary Filter and it has any gray or blackish slimy stuff in it you have something growing inside of your Fuel Tank.
Do a search for the Word Startron or Enzyme. You want a Biocide with an Enzyme in it to kill the growth and also the enzyme to eat up the bodies. This will reduce the Filter Changes until they are processed out.

Somewhat similar symptoms appeared on a 1979 300SD on here a few weeks ago.
That problem turned out to be a failed lift pump. I think the plugged tank screen is more likely but don't rule out the lift pump. I would swap the feed and return fuel lines and see what happens. If it runs fine with the lines swapped in the engine compartment it's almost certainly a plugged tank screen.

Just to verify
Ok, If I am reading the links that were posted correctly, most of the biocides can be added to the tank, left for a week and they will do the work with out me attempting to remove a full fuel tank?
Hmmmm, it would be marvelous to not have to drain and remove that tank~ Let me know if I missed an obvious step someplace, thanks! |

I went through this with a friends bad infection/car several weeks ago, five pair of filters plugged in four days.
