Pop
As I was driving to work this morning, I heard a loud POP. I thought,"what the heck was that"? Car still running great, no smoke or anything. Then I looked in the rear view mirror. The rear window glass was shattered into a million pieces. Some of the defroster elements have never worked. I imagine the uneven heating is what caused it to shatter. Oh well, it needed the rust fixed under the gasket anyway. The best part is, I changed my comprehensive coverage from $500 to $100 deductible about a month ago. Anybody else ever have this happen? It was a new thrill for me.

That's a strange one...Has the car ever been wrecked? The only time I heard of anything like that happening was on an aquaintance's old Pontiac Firebird that was wrecked...When the body shop straightened it, They apparently put a twist in the rear window frame, and after a few weeks, POW! He hit a bump or something, and the rear window just couldn't take the warping anymore, and shattered. Scared the s**t out of him.

I had the rear glass shatter on an old Plymouth Volare station wagon while I was in college. It was a cold morning and the defroster was on. I think there was not a good connection at the window and it became a hot spot. Try the same thing with a blow torch on a cold window and it will shatter too.

My buddy had a mid '80's 300 and this happened to him twice both times with the defrost on.

Thanks for the replies. Getting it fixed shortly. Just bought a new rear window gasket this morning. I don't think the car has ever been wrecked. I have had it for about 4 years now. It has been through WX a lot colder than when it popped. I guess it was just time for it to break. I think I will try to minimize the defrosting time from now on. This would be nearly a kilobuck if insurance wasn't paying for most of it.
