Driver side door dome switch problem.

I have a driver door switch not working. I removed it and cleaned it and it still does not work.

The passenger front door works well as does the both in rear.

I removed switch and jumpered the two wires with a piece of copper and it still did not work.

There is zero corrosion any where in this car and all wiring looks new throughout even though it's a 1981 240 -d it's always been garage kept.

I'm stumped. Any help will be appreciated.

The only thing I did not do yet was check fuses or replace switch with one from another door and figured neither would help since all other doors work and I jumpered the two wire plugs and that did not help.

I had exact same problem. under the dash at your left knee is the seatbelt and key buzzer. if its missing or defective the light driver side light signal does not work. mine was missing. I added the buzzer and now my light works

Thank you for the quick reply. My seat belt buzzer works but I will look under there for a problem with wire connections.

Do you know if this door switch gets it's power from the buzzer area connection ?

Thank you,

Even if it buzzes, i'm 90% sure that is still your problem. I have an extra seat belt relay/buzzer that exhibited the exact same symptoms you describe if installed in the car. I ended up taking it apart and found a burned trace on the board. I resoldered it and it works fine now. The dome light will switch on when the drivers door is open.

Ahhh, thanks again !

I just went out to look and to be honest my under dash is sealed up tight as a drum.........not even sure how to get into it.

This car has never had anything removed from it inside especially and still looks new in areas like this.

There is plastic covering everything under dash, black near the firewall and it looksd as though it's never been accessed for anything.

I will need to see a diagram of where this thing is located just to get to it.

I bet you all are right and I thank you.

Very easy. All you need to do is remove the lower dash panel. It is held in with 3 screws (covered with little plastic clip in covers) near the center of the dash under the steering wheel and one big 90 degree turn phillips head plastic screw underneath. The relay will be up and to the left attached to a bracket with one screw. I believe it is an 8mm socket that you will need to get it loose.

Thank you much. Are the screw covers sort of near the edge of the dash in front and kind of oblong ?

If this is it I should be able to do this.

Will I need a new part you think ?

I would pull the cover off of the buzzer first, likely you will be able to see the problem.

the little oblong covers snap in but not very tight, I use a dental tool and reach behind and pull out gently. then there is a phillips screw under each of the covers. On the left there is a grey plastic screw. It only has to turn 90 degrees, it wont unscrew. Once it is 90 degrees gently pull it toward the center of the car. the cover will have two parts, the rear part on the right side hooks over the foot vent so be gentle with it. your car is amazing looking. good luck

Thank you very much.

While reading all these post and others in reference to this little problem, I read where someone removed the buzzer and the car would not start.

Is anyone aware of this with a 240 D ?

Also, there must be a timer in the dome light that somehow shuts the dome off after the door is closed, is it possible I am not putting this 3 way switch in the right position ?

Passenger door turns dome on.......and dome works turned on by hand.......then there is a 3rd switch location........what does this do ?

I've never heard of that. Car should start without the relay. The switch on the light has three positions (OFF,DOOR,ON) And yes, it does have a delay.

I have a similar problem but my issue is with the front passenger door. This is for a 82 300SD and the light under the door will illuminate but the dome light would not. For what its worth one of the connectors (the single lead separate from the 3 prong plug) isn't attached on the dome light. What can be the culprit?

I switched door switches today to make double sure and it did not fix my problem.

I got into the dash and easily found the buzzer (thanks for all the help guys) .... but left it in until I can get another one.

It looks new..........but I'll switch it out to try it.

I also wonder about the dome possibly causing a problem along with the buzzer......though it does work perfectly except for driver side ?

Does anyone know if a 1977 - 240 D buzzer would fit my 81 - 240 D ?

If so I can get a used one for about $25 on ebay.

Thanks,

Revolverman.
