I thought I was wrong once. Thank goodness I was mistaken.

BTW, getting Mechanic's Certification(s) with a two year degree, although is more than most do, is NOT considered "Graduate/Professional School." In the 'real world' it's called "Trade School." Upon finishing grad/professional school, one is usually addressed as, "Doctor", "Legal Counselor", "Professor" or "Your Honor." NOT selling an AA/AS short, gotta start somewhere, everybody does.

I listed the numbers in kilowatts (the one true standardized power measurement outside of the mechanic's world) are absolutely true and accurate according to the company that made them. And again, the OM603 series began production in 1984 and was FIRST SOLD in January 1985. OM606 is a different production family, not part of this discussion.

If you have a problem with the Mercedes Benz TSB '#1 cylinder' statement, take your 'nuh-uuh' up with them. They're the ones who wrote it.

Well, considering it looks as if Forced got banned once again, perhaps you'll get your wish for a return to the topic at hand.

Along the line of the original observation of rust on the OP's fuel cap -

One fellow Jeep CRD owner in Charlotte came across reports a few months ago, that many distribution terminals and large truck stops were having to replace metal components that came in direct contact with ULSD - pump nozzles, shutoff valves, pipes, etc - after a life span of only one to two years, where previously with LSD and older diesel formulations they would last for a decade or more - due to corrosion and rust.

He said industry speculation was that this was due to the higher affinity for water that ULSD has, and also due to residual salt in the fuel - apparently, following the hydrocracking process to remove the sulfur, some if not all refineries run the fuel over some type of salt bed to remove any residual water.

I've actually noticed the same thing on the injectors for the DeLaval Enterprise 4500 HP generator at my soon-to-be-former job. During the four month summer run season the past two years, nearly all of the injectors had to be rebuilt at least once, some two or three times. The injector nozzles were wearing out in as little as 500 hours run time. We're talking giant versions of the same injectors as in our MB diesels - 1 1/2 feet long and nearly as thick as your arm, same operating pressure of 3000 psi. When disassembled after sitting idle over the winter, the internals of these injectors were covered with a thin hard coating of brown rust, often bad enough to require complete replacement of all the internals. Going back over the fuel delivery records, they've been using off-road ULSD without any type of additives since 2007, and had brand new storage tanks installed not 3 years ago. Even the district manager, who has worked at this plant for better than 2 decades, said that in years past they never had to rebuild injectors with the frequency he's seeing now.

I know that the paper I posted long ago, ... from the NRC, mentions its incompatibility with brass.

Unfortunately, just on my cell phone - which I haven't found a way yet to transfer over to the computer.

That beast is 35,000 (yes, thousand) cubic inches, 8 cylinder in line. I could easily fit down inside one of the cylinder bores. About 12 feet high and 25 feet long, with a 3 1/2 megawatt 4160 volt generator attached. Turns at 450 rpm. Actually a dual fuel engine, can run on 100 % diesel or up to 95 % nat gas/5 % diesel mix. Don't know when these beasts were first designed, but the earliest tech bulletin listed in the manual is dated 1956. Not a bit of electronics on it - it uses PNEUMATIC LOGIC CIRCUITS for all the critical timing functions inside the control panel! Entirely mechanical/pneumatic/hydraulic operation and control. But that old beast is tough as nails and ultra reliable when properly cared for. Many of the nuclear plants still use this exact same engine for emergency backup operations - matter of fact ours is classified as a "nuclear" grade engine.

When running at full power on 95 % nat gas, it will only use 15 gph of diesel. 200 psi air start system, no glow plugs.

I laughed like hell last week when they interviewed one guy as my replacement. He said he had experience as a diesel mechanic, having worked on Cummins, Powerstrokes, etc. He walked right past that gigantic beast on his way to the office. When asked what he thought of our engine, he got a puzzled look on his face and asked "where is it?".
