vacuum pump gasket

im putting vac pump back on my 79300sd-gasket is hard to get, seems to be only available with rebuild kit at 275 $,gasket has to have 8 holes-6 for bolts and 2 for guide pins-different than later pumps,im wondering what happens without gasket, useing some sort of permatex or useing gasket material and making one-though this is hard to get right, any advice

What your going to get in the kit is a paper gasket. I'd just make one yourself. Put a real light coat of permatex on it and you'll be set.

Fastlane has the gasket you're looking for by the way - http://catalog.peachparts.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=&yearid=1979%40%401979&makeid=63%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&modelid=6203%3AED%7C10000133%3AMBC%7C1509%40%40300SD&keyword=vacuum+pump&subcatid=P:240733@@Vacuum%20Pump%20Gasket&mode=PA

Use a small ball peen hammer. Lay gasket paper over the mating face of the V/P, tap, tap, tap, presto, you have your gasket. I use a small amount of blue RTV to hold it in place when you install it.

Gasket material and ball peen hammer. It will be as good as a preformed one you buy.

Yeah, most people don't realize how different the early 116 pumps are. One very nice feature of that pump is that all the vacuum accessories are not dependent on the big line to the MC, so even if that line fails, you can still get vacuum to brakes and vice versa.

so my vacuum pump saga is over.ive got a good used one in ,measures 25 vacuum, brakes work, shuts off very quickly, doors good, shifts better -its a miracle.after taking pump off 4 times finally realized there was a collar on old one that comes off and needs to be put on new one-duh.used new pump gasket with 6 holes and created 2 holes where guide pins go in, added some permatex to keep gasket intact and its good to go.this has taken me a week of figuring it out.now i can get pump in and out in 30 minutes, too bad i dont have to do it for a long time.so im proud of myself and grateful for this forum ,and phil.persisitence pays off.

I've heard a brown paper bag from a supermarket makes an excellent thin gasket. Anyone tried it?

I've used it for a reed in a foot valve and it works great.

When I was a kid we (the neighborhood gang) had an old Ford Model A. We used butcher paper for a head gasket, didn't last long but it was free and easy to replace

I've used a 12 pack carton's cardboard more than once. Better than nothing or waiting another day.

Rosenfe, where did you source the rebuild kit, used one, etc.? Have the same pump on mine. Thanks!

Might be good to add the info to this thread so future readers know how to source the rebuild kit.
