Discovery of Broken Primer Pump?
The day after purchasing my 'new' 1982 Mercedes 300D turbo diesel, I figured I'd give her a diesel purge... After McGyverying together a closed-circuited massive gatorade bottle and connecting the hoses, I unscrewed the primer pump and pumped, achieving some success into the primary fuel filter, but not enough due to diesel spilling out in between the shaft of the pump and the plastic pumper part itself..
After looking online at another primer pump, I realized my primer pump is missing a rubber stopper to mediate in between the shaft and plastic pumper. (Am I right?) So, I decided to buy a push-button primer pump off of ebay a few minutes ago, and I've also gathered that I will need a basin wrench for the replacement (yes?). Amazon has a few that I can order if this is correct. The most experience I have with a diesel engine is starting up my mom's Dodge Ram 3500 every now and then when I go home for a visit, so I'm particularly looking for reassurance on this and if I'm wrong, then someone hopefully to set me on the right track so I can get this bad boy/girl purring again. I'm handy and have replaced my filters..except fo my oil filter because I can't find my ratchet set, and my torche wrench started to strip the bolt(Should I use wd40 on the bolt first, before I wrench it off?). Lastly, I'm stoked to have entered the diesel club...and soon to be the biodiesel club! -Cody Gibson |

You're on the right track. Replace the pump and you should be good to go.
What was stripping? The exterior faces of the nut or the threads? I don't understand how a torque wrench would cause stripping any differently than a ratchet.

I use small vice grips to remove the old one and a proper sized open end (17mm, I think) stubby to install the new one.
A 13 mm socket should work on the oil filter canister. I've heard to not use a torque wrench to loosen anything and I don't, but am not sure if that's gospel. If it is stripped out, you'll need to fix that before you start the car again.

Not all basin wrenches will work. A chepo one I have is to fat, (that is the "finger' that fits around the back of the pump) so look for one with a skinny finger.

ABC 123!
Kerry, Woot! Thanks for your supporting response. I'm glad to be understanding this well enough to do it on my own thus far(next is a DIY odometer fix in which the dashboard will be 'popped out.'..then to tackle the A/C...).
That should've been more clear, thus I'll clarify: The oil filter nut is the piece that's stripping when I used my pliars(which couldn't get the grip a socket will be able to acheive), and giving me some trouble loosening. You're selling my same W123 frame; what are you asking? I may have a friend interested, depending on how far you are away from Florida? |

You do not need a basin wrench to replace the primer pump.
The fuel inlet nipple next to the primer pump can be unscrewed. Once that is out of the way, you can remove the primer pump with an ordinary box end wrench.

Or a crow's foot wrench.

Sounds like you've got it under control. Once you get the nuts off you can pick up replacements at any autoparts store. Just remember the threads are metric. The primer pump is easy to replace.
Sounds like you've got a handle on it. Good luck. Welcome to the club. Oh. Pictures are worth 1000 words: http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/PrimerPump
