issues found while replacing my center link

my 82SD has a crack in the metal on the crossmember below the oil filter...
it is all across the lower section and up the side... I think it should be repaired, but not sure it's something I can handle.

it looks like a stress crack to me. could have been there since it was built. I think there is paint in it and it has not been repainted.

How good are you at structural welding John?
Over here that would require welding by some one with the appropriate certification & then inspection & a certificate of structural integrity by an Engineer. Lucky your not over here!!
If you can close the gap & weld it. Thats a start. I would then weld a reinforcement plate over the top with zigzag sides so that there is a long, not straight weld. That reduces the likely hood of a fresh crack developing along the edge of the welds. Being so close to the spring pearch would cause a close inspection over here.
Good Luck !!

Edit; I thought it was the long opening up & down near the spring!!

That little crack should be welded closed. You may be able to add some more spot welds as well or drill through the first layer & mig like a spot or 2.

It looks like a crack through the weld just below the "e" & another one near the bottom of the pic.
vertical up welding is not easy.

it's not that old a thread... I still drive, and have not fixed the car...
I've since found LOTS more cracks in the car... gotta get it UP on a lift, and fix it all, or just unload the car, and upgrade to my neighbor's 85...

I cannot tell for sure but it looks like there is more than one crack.

Here is my suggestion:

Grind off the cracked piece of metal back to the Blue line if there is a 2nd crack and weld it.
If there is no 2nd crack grind it back to the Yellow line and Weld along the Blue or Yellow Line.
Most likely a Flux Core Welder would not undercut the metal as a ARC Welder would do.

The problem with using a thicker reinforcement plate is that it needs some careful design or the thinner metal will simply break in another place.
The reason is that the Reinforced area will not flex as much as the un-reinforced area.

actually, if you look below the word "here", about where your lower arrow points... you will notice that the subframe weld above the labeled plate is cracked through as well... the poor car must have been in some heavy rough roads in it's past...

I did not see that crack. Structurally it looks worse than the other.

If it were mine I would do what ever grinding was needed to the area outlined in yellow to peel that area back or remove it completely because it is likely the larger Crack extends under it.

Hey John. I am curious. Is this the same car you posted about cracks near the subframe mounts? also Is this the speed demon SD? I have to admit that I will be checking over mine very thoroughly!
