Based on my experience with my 83 300d na with 307 diff and five speed overdrive (about equal to 2.47 ratio) I would estimate the fuel economy would improve from 3 to 5 mpg but top speed will remain the same as with the lower gear.

My car will do 35 mpg at 70 mph and its top speed is 100 mph in fourth or fifth gear.
