616 power rating

So my 1982 240d has a plack under the hood stating it makes 65 hp but from what i have read (and in wikipedia) in 1978 it was updated and then uprated to 72hp. um.. what gives? did mercedes make a change and then just not change the under-hood badges? that doesnt sound very german, not that it really maters i just thought it was weird.

I don't know why it's different, but remember that their are plenty of different ways of measuring power; with or without accessories attached, different operating air pressures and temperatures, different exhaust resistance, different emissions equipment installed, etc.

I don't think it was ever 72 HP, it never got out of the 60's IIRC.

Wikipedia-----
The OM616.916 was a 2.4 L (2404 cc) engine with power output of 65 hp (48 kW). In August 1978 the precombustion chamber was updated for more swirl and more efficient combustion. The engine capacity was lowered to (2399 cc) to satisfy engine displacement tax laws in europe, but power output rose to 72 hp (54 kW).

Some Applications:
  • 616.916 64 PS (48 kW) and 101fl lb. of torque.

Engine and Transmission

  • All model years of the Mercedes 240D used the OM 616, an engine commonly seen in different Mercedes models in the 1970s and 1980s. It was a 2.4-liter, straight-four diesel engine with 72 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 101 foot-pounds of torque at 2,400 rpm. The engine had a 3.58-inch bore and a 3.64-inch stroke, with a compression ratio of 21.0 to 1. The OM 616 featured fuel injection with a mechanical fuel-injection pump. In 1981 it received several updates that carried over into later model years: new pistons that were cast with star-shaped tops, new pre-chambers for the indirect injection and glow plugs that were more efficient. The Mercedes-Benz 240D had a standard four-speed manual transmission and an optional automatic

The 616 in the XX7d vans were rated at higher horsepower than the automobile versions. Different IP I think.

MB used to use DIN & most in the USA used SAE. Its like comparing a draft horse with a pony!

Its only a number, how the car performs overall is far more important.

what does european vs american stardards have to do with the question? It appears there are two different ratings i just want to know if there was a update of some kind or if it is just some more internet b.s. and even though it is only a couple of hp it would be interesting to know what was changed.

    FYI

Der Motor OM 621 sowie seine nur wenig veränderten Nachfolger OM 615 und OM 616 sind Dieselmotoren mit Vorkammereinspritzung und vier Zylindern in Reihe, entwickelt und produziert von Mercedes-Benz.

So another place that says it should be rated as 72 hp. the under hood plate still says 65 hp.
