Be careful what kind of block heater you use.

Workers using an alternative heating method in abominably cold weather this morning sparked a fire at a mountain landfill. The fire broke out about 9:40 a.m. at the Summit County landfill, just off of U.S. Highway 6 between Keystone and Dillon, said Steve Lipsher, a Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue spokesman. Workers at the landfill put a pan with lit charcoal in it under a semi-tractor's oil pan, in an attempt to help heat the engine in minus 30 degree weather, and the tractor caught fire. "This is one of those things that is directly related to the weather," Lipsher said. "They had a unique adaptation for handling it." No one was injured in the fire. Two engines and seven firefighters raced to the dump to douse the fire. Two tractors, which are used to haul refuse around the landfill, were damaged. "It was an accidental fire," Lipsher said. "They clearly didn't mean to torch the truck." It took firefighters about an hour to put out the fire and mop up. it's REALLY hard to extinguish an oil fire. it's MUCH harder to do it under the hood of a burning piece of equipment...

that's what happens when you replace steel fuel lines with plastic ones.... haven't been able to heat a truck that way or with a blowtorch over here for 30 odd years

"This is one of those things directly related to the weather" should read "this is one of those things directly related to stupidity." Any other course of action would have been better than that one, including doing nothing.

Perhaps it's worth mentioning that warming up one's engine with a tray of charcoal briquettes has been suggested on this forum on the past.

Before using anything open flame I would use my 1) old electric blanket stuffed under the hood 2) old heating pad (really works good) or 3) the partially worthless magnetic oil pan heater....or a combination of all three given that I had enough extension cords on hand.
This is as bad as the old lady in a Chicago area flea market who wrapped herself and a kerosun heater in a blanket while she sat at the market. It didn't take long before she was on fire.

This is one of those things where the newer guys say, "hey, we can't get the truck started... we can't work." and the boss responds by showing them, "how we did it in the old days," rather than have his crew doing nothing all day. Look how smart he looks now!
