cool experience today
Last night I went over to a guys house to check out a 83 240d, it had 323k for 1200 so I was keeping a open mind. After he answered the door he said he would come out thru the garage. When he opened the garage two of the three mercedes showed their faces.
Anywho we started going thru the 240d, I thought my 300sd engine bay was clean. His was gorgous, couple of words came to mind that I had to say under my breath. When he opend the drivers door I was floored again. It turned out the car had been his sisters car up until two years ago. He only drove it to the store and back. Anywho I put a deposit down for him to hold it till this morning. I went over to his house this am and picked up to go over to the bank to finish buisness. When we pulled up to the bank, he asked me to leave the car running for a little bit so he could listen. After a while he complimented me and asked that I take care of the 240d for him. |

That's the interesting thing about W123s.... At this age and at that price we generally expect them to be in pretty rough condition. Every so often though you do come across those well maintained examples that are just stunning. It's a good day when that happens

This reminds me of a similar experience. I saw an ad for a $400 1979 300SD on craigslist that was painted with white latex house paint using a roller brush.
I didn't expect anything much, but when I saw the car in person, the engine bay looked totally clean and the engine had nice black paint with the factory markings on the block and nice shiny injector lines. The engine ran like it was new and the car had plenty of power. The interior was in near mint condition, almost like new. Upon further inspection, I found the entire car to be in like new condition other than someone painting the outside with house paint because someone didn't like the Manganese brown color. It even had the "Daimler-Benz product" decal on the original windshield! I could have bought the car for $300, and I really, really regret not purchasing it because, even as a parts car, it would be well worth it. The reasons I didn't buy it were: 1. It didn't have a sunroof 2. I wanted a Walnut Brown, not a Manganese Brown car 3. Not enough room on the property for another car. But looking back, if I had to do it all over again, I definitely would have bought it.
