1990 300sdl, #6 injector line will not stop breaking!
new here, but here goes:
technically this is a 350sdl, but the rodbender engine went kaput on the previous owner, and it was replaced with the 3 litre 300 engine before i bought it. be that as it may, about six months ago the #1 injector line broke at the pump. so i figured i'd be smart, and replace the whole set of lines and be ahead of the game. the new #6 line was routed differently than the old one, and i'm on the fourth one that has broken. it will shear off under the nut, sometimes at the pump end, sometimes at the injector end. the mechanic noticed that a couple of the loom/brace clips for the injector lines were missing. these were replaced, and in spite of that the #6 line has broken (at the pump end) yet again. what am i missing here? i've owned several mitsubishi, toyota and mecedes diesel units and never have i had an injector line break, until now. |

Welcome to the forum!
I'm not sure why your line keeps breaking, but can you take some pictures of what you have now? it's possible you are getting lines for the later model #22 head with the angled injectors, and they are binding on your older injectors. can you look at the casting # on your head, and tell us what that is, along with pics of your lines? thanks!

assuming it is the correct line, correct shape / length, with correct fixings....
get a blowtorch, and a bed of dry sand, heat the sand in an oven to 200 celcius, takes an hour, pour some of the sand in a container, heat the whole line cherry red, put it on the sand, cover with the rest of the hot sand, leave three hours to cool. clean outside of pipe with emery tape, clean inside from both ends with 100 psi airline, do each end three times, then flush through with clean diesel. fit, finger tight both ends, should BOTH nip right up with fingers only if you have the right pipe and shape, tighten IP end last flat or two, run engine till pipe bleeds and tighten injector end last flat or two. job done. |

ok, the head # has been partially ground off. it appears as though a bit of material (~1mm) has been removed behind each injector. the first three or four digits may be missing:___2 016 22 01.

... I thought the #22 heads had the angled injectors? yours look straight.
here is what my 87TD looks like... |

they do have a slight pitch of about 3 degrees towards the front. look at #'s three and four, i think the wide angle of the camera lens is making it appear that #6 is perpendicular.

It's hard to tell the difference in angle from a photo. However, the head is the correct head for the later lines, be sure that you ordered the lines for a '91 SDL and NOT for the 3.0L engine that is in there (the lines match the head).

What the heck is all that mess that's caught next to the injectors?

Slow learner
I have experience with this. I have had 3 lines break on a 601. The first one was #4 and I replaced it. 200 miles later that same one broke again. I traced it to that line was missing one of it's supports. I made a new support for it and installed a new line. That was 2 1/2 years ago. No problems with that line since.
Same engine, 2 months ago. 200 miles after I replaced the IP, #1 line broke and guess what I found. I had not reinstalled the support for that line after the IP install.

EDIT: Oh stupid me; Check what number the head is. If it starts with (I believe) 22 you've got a 350SDL head.

#17 and later heads have angled injection. I believe my 350 would have had a #18 head from the factory, but the reman motor has a #22.
