About two dollars a liter in eastern Canada.. So roughly about 7.50 an American gallon right now. Really hurts people that were just getting by on the older prices of things.
Too bad these older diesels are not more fuel efficient. |

All old cars that survive eventually escape their roll as daily drivers. I expected to source some used parts for this year. Found our fast it is going to be both harder and more expensive I suspect.
Not a big issue yet but will become one. Guys that are willing to do their own maintenance needs are growing fewer. Paying others to do it you had better own or find an example almost as good as the best. I only am aware of one other 123 in seemingly daily operation in this area. No 114s or 115s or 126s. They all appear to be gone in my region. In my quest for some used parts I did find a large stash of these cars. It is a thousand miles away but not far from one of our daughters. So if I can get a response from that person. Plus his prices are not insane. That daughter gets a spring visit. If there are any parts cars left regionally I am not finding them. Photographs of his place show probably fifty cars. Most appear to be 114s and 123s. He claims to have a lot of good engines and transmissions pulled from rust buckets as well. Truthfully seeing all he still has I suspect unreasonable prices. This is a hobby to me. Or few owners know of his existance. For example I want a rear end and speedometer head from an 85 for our 84 300d. Plus this and that. I have a mint black interior in a 1983 I am parting out myself. Except the passenger seat bottom had something spilt on it. like nail polish remover hit the vinyl. Low millage example that I purchased with rust but mechanically it is really sound. As I forsaw parts would become scarcer over the years. |

Probably more w126 cars than 123 because there were some newer (and more gas) drivetrains, plus 1991 is a far way from 1985. I don’t think I’d want to daily a 114, 115, or 116 anyway. Ive never seen a 116 Ive liked in person, though the body styling is so great. I can’t see how a 115 would be better than a 123 in any regard, including creature comforts. I have working ac in my w123 cars, but I can see even the performance of the ac systems, let alone the power and economy of the 123 to be a factor against to most folks. Power doesn’t bother me, I don’t mind driving my 240 anywhere… but long highway travel at speed does get droning…. The second gen w126 is probably the best bet, along with the w124…. But they all bring 60x issues….

Daily Drivers
I still see W123's, W116's and early W126's almost daily in So. Cal., the blush flew off the Diesel rose some years ago so the old beaters are mostly gone or just sitting, the ones I see generally have very nice paint and upholstery .
Most of them wave at me .

I daily my W126 and added 22k miles on it last year. If you're reading the diesel section on this forum you have a passion for vehicles but a vehicle is simply an appliance to most. Just throw away that old car and buy a new one. Do your part to keep the exponential growth economy rolling.
Things can be done to make an older car feel more like a newer car. I think a common rail OM648 and 722.6 transmission would make a W126 feel quite modern and return excellent fuel economy. You'd still have a comfortable vehicle with no distracting screens and government mandated warning systems, that would be inexpensive to repair, and possible to repair with standard tools at home.
