Massive OM617 oil leak at head gasket? Or intake manifold?
I was taking a look at a 617 that had a very bad oil leak with oil pooling on top of the bell housing behind the head. The vc gasket is not leaking and the turbo oil pressure line is not chaffed through. Could it be a headgasket?
I dont think thats a common failure. Is it possible that the intake manifold is leaking oil when its under boost? There is a lot of oil leaking down where the starter is and also another isolated case underneath cylinder two's intake port (but its hard to tell for sure). I guess its possible to leak under boost. Car also whistles alot. This seems likely but I would like to see if anyone has ever seen this before. Thanks

Turbo oil like runs back there. Its pretty easy for a hard line to vibrate against metal and get a hole. I ate through a trans cooler line in under 6 months due to my own stupidy. Not saying thats its but its a possibility. I just the rest of your post and that is what I would be looking at. Oil feed line.

The 617s are not known for leaking from the outside of the head gasket.

I had the same problem once by not settling the vc gasket correctly -lots of oil pooling over bell housing, big mess! Are you really sure its not the vc? I set the gasket on the vc and then lift the valve cover and gently thump it up and down on the cylinder head evenly which i makes a nice thumping sound when seated correctly -double check your vc, good luck

The vehicle prior to that had a bad turbo bearing oil leak + bad intake/exhaust gasket = spitting oil down the block/starter area. Both issues are DIY. .
