Air and some smoke coming out the oil fill hole would be considered fairly normal on these engines. You may have just been lucky as that engine did tighten up and stall with no oil.
Do not go on a long trip for quite awhile as it is not certain yet everything will be reliable. I hope you have lucked out but that was really pushing it. Check you oil level quite frequently for the next while then once every fill up. This is something that has been relegated to the past on cars. It never hurts to still practice it at every fillup on any car. It can be too late by the time an idiot light illuminates on a car. |

Welcome to the forum!
Definitely check the oil regularly. When the car is running, go someplace, park the car someplace clean and see if there is any drip. You may have another leak somewhere. If you can, try to stay away from Strauss and Jiffy Lube and the like with these cars. There are way too many horror stories. Even if you get lucky one time, there's a good chance you'll get the kid who knows nothing the next time. Check the forum here for independent shops in NJ who specialize in MB cars. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/new-jersey/

this is the main reason I NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER (adinfinitum) ever recommend oil change places.
it's actually COMMON that they screw up and forget either the oil, the bolt, the filter, the (insert stupid mistake here) whatever. I've gotten several cars that were warranty claim damaged cars from places like these. go back, demand a new motor for your car. then call a lawyer and sue them for 5K damages (it's all you're going to get) your motor is toast.

Heck, I've even had an MB dealer screw up an oil change, and end up with the oil level a a good one inch above the full mark - 9 or 10 quarts in the 603 in the wrecked 87. Fortunately, I checked it before I even left their parking lot, showed the service manager, and he immediately pulled the car back in and corrected the situation - young gent that changed the oil had used the "vacuum via dipstick tube" method to remove the old oil, and had missed at least one or two quarts. When I changed it myself by pulling the oil pan plug, the recommended 8 quarts put the level right at the full mark. Quick thought - does your car have an oil pressure gauge, and if so what did it read prior to stalling out?

I've watched those places do it. Drain the transmission thinking it was the engine and then put new oil into the engine.
I would definitely go back there and ask for a new engine although you'll need some evidence. I wonder what the average number of engine replacements are paid for every day by the big chain oil change companies?

I one time got a 5 year old mercury sable wagon ( I still have that wagon) for 100.00 because the seller could not remove the oil drain plug after the quicklube place destroyed it. turns out they destroyed it AFTER they drained the oil... claimed they could not do the service because the plug was damaged, and never put oil back in... anybody wanna buy a decent 90 sable wagon with third row seating?... cheap?...
