I agree. Fixing that old downpipe is probably wasted time.

A little piece of hard learned wisdom:
Have your new exhaust hanging on the rubber hangers and sitting normal before welding any of your joints. Mine wasn't and sits cockeyed now. Dang indys.

Who needs MIG when you gots Acetylene?

I WISH I had a gas setup... it costs too much to acquire all the stuff needed. Although tractor supply has a neat bottle exchange, just like propane, for oxygen and acetylene. but you stiff have to buy the bottles when you start off.

I guess I will take a look at the pick-a-pull. I just hate the idea of laying in puddles of cold water on these 40* days.

So the hardware should be brass? In theory a down pipe should be semi easy to remove at the jk.

Take some penetrating oil with you for the 3 nuts at the turbo, and maybe for the ones under the car at the flange. I have had good luck with Kano-Kroil.

I bought a down pipe from a JY several yrs ago. Not a PNP type yard, before I discovered PNP . guy charged me $100 for it. then later on doing some on line searching, found a new one for $125..

Then a yr or so later, it broke at the flex piece, and had to buy a new one any way.

Most of the one`s I have seen at our PNP`s have all been mashed, cut or bent by the PNP Goons.

As far as the welding goes, it`s hard to impossible to weld on rust. you need clean metal.

Anyone know what the list price is for a new down pipe from the dealer? There is a local shop in town that is selling off inventory and they have several OEM pipes in stock, 50% of list. Already got a good quote for tierods and a draglink.

Thanks

I need the part number too, they don't have any manuals anymore.

Interesting enough, this place was looking for someone to lease their service area and related tools with the possibility of ownership. Back in the day this place imported MB's. Now they just sell a few(less than 8) cars here and there. He is retiring I think.

Part Number 123-490-1720 300TD front pipe/down pipe/header pipe.

I have now seen it called all three things. Most aftermarket supplies seem to be gone, dealer cost is $195. I am try one place that claim to have them in stock for $110

How about stealing the one you have on other car long enough to duplicate it. ?
For welding questions I suggest :

http://weldingweb.com/

If your mig is using Argon I suspect you can weld SS... Other gases... those guys will be glad to advise...

I found a place that had 3 in stock and ordered one. My MIG is actually a flux core... I wish I could make is gas. I also wist I could find an acetylene setup for cheap. That's how I prefer to weld.
