new member, new W123

Hey guys, I've been lurking here for a little while while searching for info on diesel W123's. I finally picked one up today! She is an '83 300D with 241K on the clock (though the ODO stopped working in June 2011). I bought it from an older guy who took extremely good care of it and gave me a stack of records along with it. Anyway, this car will mostly serve as a daily driver for my girlfriend (she is in love with vintage MBs). I'm looking forward to getting to know some good people here! This is my first venture into MB stuff, I come from the VW/Audi and Domestic truck side of things...

On with the pics: (sorry for the poor quality, I literally just got home and it was getting dark)

welcome! great looker there when you get ready to fix the odo post after you pull the cluster and I'll pass on some tips. have you checked for rust? I like to pull battery tray & lay rubber down clean out the drains & enjoy!

Where are you in Washington State? I've fixed my odometer, and would be happy to show you what i've learned about them. You can update your forum account to show your location automagically.

Congratulations on your find. It looks like shes the same color as my "85" 240D, #427, Russet Brown. I like that shade of brown, really waxs out nice. I would have a hard time turning that car over to my GF :D

Renntag 02-11-2011 11:23 AM

Welcome.
Gorgeous car.
GF sounds like a keeper.
Plenty of time to get ready for the Odometer to break this coming June. ;)

I can tell the future, I probably should have mentioned ;)

haha, thanks for catching that, I meant June 2010!

Thanks for linking the ODO fix Charlie, I hope to get on that right away.

Believe me, I can't wait to get cracking on a full detail. Detailing is another hobby of mine, so she will get the full treatment!

I checked pretty thoroughly for rust, although I didn't get to pull carpet or anything. It has been a garage queen its whole life, so I'm crossing my fingers when I actually get into the car that I won't find too much.

Thanks Kurt, that would be awesome. I'm in Bellingham right now, soon to be in Gig Harbor again, though.

Yes, she is a keeper. Hard to find a girl who can appreciate great cars these days. Proposal is in the works ;)

Very nice! Congrats! I think I saw this car on Craigslist, it's a great color. :)

Well maybe we have a Mercedes Get Together (GTG) at your Wedding ;).

Really is rare to find women that have a love for an older car, let alone to work on them. we have a few here on the Forum that put a lot of the guys to shame.

haha, I like the idea for the wedding GTG, that would be the definition of class! And she is warming up to the idea of working on the car, but she's not making any promises... yet ;)

Had an adventure today. Went to the store and came back to the car and the damn key wouldn't turn in the ignition. Tried jiggling it for about 20 minutes but nothing. Called AAA to get it towed back to the house and went to get a coffee. Came back, sat in the car to wait for the tow truck. Then after another 45 minutes of jiggling, the key magically turns the lock cylinder. So I called AAA to cancel and off we went. Looks like I'll be busy replacing the lock cylinder in the next couple of days.

...and I took some decent pics:

here you can see one of her only major exterior flaws, a 12" crease just under the mirror :( :

Anyway, sorry for all the pics. Where is a decent place to get a quality lock cylinder?
