I used simple green and a toothbrush. This 32 year old car had never been detailed, I'm sure of it. Took about 6 hours. Then coat everything with 303 Protectant and WD40, wipe down.

Yes, it's clean enough to eat off of now!

Yes, OP bought it new from LA Motors, spent some time in Idaho, then Wyoming, but always stored in a garage. There was quite a lot of dirt in the wheel wells. I imagine if it had been left much longer without proper care that rust would have set in for sure. Certainly would have for any lesser car. All records and paperwork came with the car, it is truly one of those barn-finds. I flew to Rapid City and drove it back to LA. Everything works.

Here's a 'before' pic. Lots of Wyoming dust:

And a couple of exterior before it got buffed out:

It's looking like a new car these days. I hate to sell it.

Beautiful car Chris. Stunning engine bay, I'd love to photograph that beauty. Too bad I can't attend this weekend's meet.

Cleaning Cam Cover

This was corroded, caustic cleaners and time had done their damage, plus oil and crud. I cleaned it first with a bit of brake-cleaner, then hit it with a green 3M pad on the air sander, time spent about 10minutes.

After that I used a Scotch-Brite pad to rub all of the lines in one direction so that there aren't swirl-marks all over it, looks pretty good IMO.

Not a fine polish nor clear coated, just a nice shiny natural look in about 15minutes (the cover was already off of the engine).

Pretty nice Jeff!!!

I took this one yesterday as I was getting the new "used" exhaust installed, but before the heat shield and air cleaner went in. Also did the water pump, t-stat, motor mounts, belt, tensioner shock, fan and fan clutch..... I did some cleaning, polishing and painting. Clear coated the polished stuff (except the valve cover - that will be later with the intake) with 500 degree clear to keep it from rusting. Did any nuts, bolts, screws I took off too. 2000 degree flat cast paint on the manifold.

Very nice. Mine won't be looking that good installed, but it'll be kept clean! It's been 20 years since I had a freshly assembled and sealed Mercedes 124 engine and transmission!

Yeah- I went from 83 HP to 81 HP and it sounded ten times better to me. Over 10 0-30mph tests showed no decrease in time. Plus I had another full setup in my garage for reconversion anytime. Glad your one comment dealt with that...

Hope you rinsed everything super well afterward as Simple Green is a proven corrosive agent on aluminum.

Washed today, but engine was warm. So I just wiped it down with a damp towel sprayed with some Aerospace 303 & Quik Detailer.

nice! i really like the light colored paint on the engine block. you can actually see in there, not like staring into the black greasy depths. after an engine wash, i would go through and grease all the linkages and pivot points.
